Santa Rosalia, Mexico:
Big, Big Yellowtail Caught This Week During Fishing In Craig Channel

May 31, 2004, Randy Peters, Isla San Marcos, Baja California Sur, Mexico, fishing with Mike Kanzler:

I went out with Mike Kanzler and his partner from Isla San Marcos, Danny, on 5/29 and 5/30.

Mike is an excellent guide and put us on the fish immediately. Danny is also very highly skilled and very entertaining.

On Saturday, there was a strong westerly wind and fishing was difficult. We still managed to boat 8 tails.

Sunday was calmer and we boated 9 more. The yellowtail in the Craig Channel are brutes. We were fishing with dropper loops, 7/0 Owner Gorilla Hooks, and 50 and 60 lb. line with the drags cranked way up. Don't bother bringing 30 and 40 lb. test here. You will not have a chance. The fish are on the bottom and run straight for the rocks after being hooked. Giving them line will usually result in the line breaking on the rocks.

Hooking a 30 pound plus fish with practically no drag was a real physical challenge. I felt like a little girl sometimes but I managed to land 7 yellowtail over the 2 days. The fish ranged from 18 to 35 lbs. There were no runts. Our group of 4 boated a total of 17 quality fish over the 2 days. We had an excellent time at Isla San Marcos and are looking forward to our return.

Poun's only been ocean fishing for two years and is hooked (no pun intended).
