SEASON'S FIRST YELLOWFIN TUNA CAUGHT
June 16, 2005, Kelly Catian, K&M Offshore Sportfishing, San Quintin sportfishing, Baja California, Mexico:
They're here! The yellowfin tuna are in! I got the first yellowfin tuna out of San Quintin on Tuesday with Marshall Fleck, George Lowell, and Adam Jadovitz, after trying for two days with Tim and Bob Chambers and only scoring yellowtail on paddies over the weekend.
On Wednesday, I took the Fleck party out on our new boat Offshore I, and we headed out to look for good water as the inshore water is still cold.
Fishing 27 miles out of San Quintin, we got into paddy after paddy loaded with firecracker yellows and a few medium sized ones. The water was flat as a board and 64 degrees. We worked the porpoise schools by trolling at 10 plus knots while brailing bait to score 10 yellowfin tuna from 15 to 25 pounds, with one on the iron, chrome Action-Lures.
The rest of the fleet did not go out. I'm out again on Friday and ready to hit it again!
