Greybar Grunt, Haemulon sexfasciatum: Caught from shore during the predawn hour, in 85-degree water, in September 2003, in rocky structure 50 yards from shore, utilizing a 15-pound test with a one dropper loop rig, no swivels, 1.5-ounce bank sinker, and Mustad 92553 hooks, size #4, on half of a peeled shrimp at Km. 20 (Cabo Real) between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Size approximately 15 inches and 3 pounds, and was exceedingly “scrappy.” The Greybar Grunt is by locals as good table fare. Note: Experience has taught me that this is an aggressive nighttime feeder that travels in packs and the “bite” will stop with the dawn. Description and photo courtesy John Snow.

Greybar Grunt, Haemulon sexfasciatum: Local night owl, quite successful fishing from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m., early September 2003, at Cabo Real, Km. 20, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, using Sally Lightfoot crab baits to catch Greybar Grunts. Note flashlight in the photo! Description and photo courtesy John Snow.
Greybar Grunt, Haemulon sexfasciatum: This Greybar Grunt, 21 inches long, was caught on 12-pound line at Punta Colorada, Baja California Sur, Mexico, in June 2000. It hit a Rapala fished from a panga. I caught five of those during ten days of trolling along the rocks. Fights like a pargo of similar size. Interesting light red color on the inside of the mouth.
