Burrito Grunt
Raidito, Roncador
(Anisotremus interruptus)

Burrito Grunt, Anisotremus interruptus: The Burrito Grunt is the confusing fish which changes appearance dramatically as it matures.

The Burrito Grunt is characterized by the sharp slanting profile of its head, its fleshy lips, and its large, conspicuous scales with dark spots on their anterior margins, which turn into triangular-shaped spots below the lateral line.

This fish species has an overall silvery-yellowish green color with light yellow pectoral fins and the other fins a darker greenish brown. As the fish matures the lips become excessively large and a small trench develops across the upper lip.

Distribution in Mexico fishing areas

The Burrito Grunt is found in all Mexican fishing waters south of Magdalena Bay, on the Pacific coast of the Baja California peninsula, along the mainland to Guatemala, and around the oceanic islands including the Revillagigedos.

It grows to a length of 1.5 feet and is generally found around inshore rocky reefs and in caves in the first 100 feet of the water column. Care must be taken to distinguish the Burrito Grunt from the Golden Eye Grunt, Haemulon scudderi (silver-gray appearance with white to dusky black fins). The Burrito Grunt is viewed as good table fare but is generally small and impractical to fillet.

The Burrito Grunt is a member of the Haemulidae or Grunt Family which are known in Mexico as "burros."

Burrito Grunt, Anisotremus interruptus: Caught while fishing from shore, early morning, in 73-degree water, April 2003, in the "suds" in and around the "trough," utilizing 15-pound test with a two dropper loop rig, no swivels, 1.5-ounce bank sinker, and Mustad 92553 hooks, size #4, on cut squid, at Km. 20 (Cabo Real) between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Size 12.5 inches and 1 pound, and was “scrappy.” Viewed by locals as good table fare and if you can locate them in a feeding state you can catch a bucket full. This fish is a confusing fish to identify, as its color varies from almost pure silver to a gold and black. It can also be caught far out at sea with similar bottom rigs in sizes that approach 15 inches and 4 pounds. Description courtesy of John Snow. Photo courtesy of Carol Snow.
