GULF GROUPER DOUBLE HOOKUP FOR SPORTFISHING BOAT BONUS TIME

Oct. 13, 2006, Curt Grant, Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco), Sonora, Mexico:

I launched my boat "Bonus Time" about an hour before high tide on Saturday Oct. 7, 2006, at Safe Marina in Rocky Point.

I've never seen the water at Rocky Point up as high as it was that day.

My wife Doris and I headed out into beautiful 85-degree plus water and found sierras and grunts for bait right off the point from Manny's.

We ended up cruising around and enjoyed a nice sunset.

On Sunday morning we trolled out to my favorite fishing reef but did not get any takers along the way. We started dropping Scampis and cut bait and after the third drift we had a double hookup. I was able to get my fish in the boat, a nice 35-pound plus gulf grouper, but Doris's fish made it back to his hole and we lost it.

We were 16 miles out of Rocky Point on a 185 degree heading, in approximately 130 feet of water.

We fished a few more hours but the bite had turned cold and we elected to cruise. The water was even nicer on Sunday with just a slight wind chop to cruise through.
