YELLOWTAIL FISHING ON HOLD FOR LOCAL SPORTFISHING BOATS

June 1, 2005, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:

The yellowtaill fishery at Loreto has pretty much come to a screeching halt. Only a very few fish have been reported caught over the past week. Fishing water temperatures in the Loreto vacation area are on the rise and we are making way for the summer species to arrive in better numbers now.

If you enjoy light tackle action on roosterfish, Cabrilla, Pargo, Jack Crevalle, Barracuda and others then this is a very good time to fish at Loreto.

Roosterfish are plentiful in many Loreto sportfishing locations right now. You should expect them 100 to 200 yards off the shorelines from just north of town. There are also lots of roosterfish off Isla Carmen's Punta Perico, and Bahia Salinas to Punta Baja. Our fly guys are getting them by tossing live sardinas off the boat and later casting into roosters that crash those sardinas. During the full moon phase the bite slowed but it is back on again. The water temperature also took a nosedive plunging 5-10 degrees along the shoreline from Punta Perico to midway down Isla Carmen but it seems to have improved the Roosterfishing.

In addition to Roosterfish also expect Cabrilla, Pargo, Barracuda, Ladyfish, Triggerfish, Giant Wrasse and other Jack Species. Cabrilla are the most prevalent inshore fish these days.

Dorado are still a long ways off from Loreto but are coming in more frequently now. Don't expect wide open conditions and we don't consider them "in" at any rate, but they are at least "out there". Captain Andres Cota captained a private boat yesterday and they returned with two dorado, one a female at 27 pounds and the other a male just under 50 pounds. He told me that he went 35 miles beyond Punta Lobos. He says there's little blue water out there currently and that the Dorado are still eating 8-10 inch squid out there. They also landed one sailfish. Loreto pangas fishing with Arturo's fleet also caught Dorado and Sailfish yesterday.

Captain Eulogio Davis Sanchez and his two clients brought in three Dorado ranging in size from 45 to just under 30 pounds. He was offshore of Punta Lobos, a total of 45 miles from the port of Loreto.

Captain Antonio Romero Murillo brought in two bull dorado weighing 28 and 37 pounds. Water surface temperature range in our Loreto fishing area is 80-67 degrees.
