SLOW FISHING AMID SEA LIONS AT LOS CABOS

Dec. 23, 2005, Bob Grimes, San Jose del Cabo, Baja, Mexico fishing:

Fishing continues to be slow here at San Jose del Cabo. On Monday, Dave and I went to the Iman and San Luis and various other bajos. We were the only panga fishing in the area. All the others went toward Cabo San Lucas to fish for small tuna. We caught some barrilete, various snappers, and small grunts. There are sierra near the beach at Punta Palmilla and Punta Gorda, but they aren't biting well. We have caught some by trolling small Rapalas from our kayak.

The sea lions have been very aggressive lately, at Cabo San Lucas as well as at the Gordo Banks, Iman, and San Luis. The commercial fishermen have killed most of the sharks for many years, and it is said that the lack of these predators has greatly increased the herds of seals. The newspaper La Tribuna of Los Cabos said that a seal was injured by a net near Cabo San Lucas.
