SKUNKED TRIP WITH LA LEONA SPORTFISHING

July 29, 2005, Rudy Gonzales, San Jose del Cabo fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico Report:

I fished with La Leona sportfishing at San Jose del Cabo (Los Cabos) on July 18th and pretty much got skunked. I connected with a sales guy in front of Margaritaville by the marina. We did have a 300-pound blue marlin strike, but it threw the hook when it jumped toward us rather than away. It was a very exciting 15 seconds.

Later we saw free jumping marlin and chased them with no luck.

My first time out buddy was impressed with the marlin, although we did not catch anything that day.

Over in Cabo San Lucas the marina was shut down on the 20th, so I gambled and went out the next day only to get skunked again in high swells. We tried fishing the shore line for a roosterfish on the way in but no luck.

The bait seemed to be good in both places. At San Jose del Cabo, we had some nice mullets and in San Lucas we had some hearty Caballitos. I even bought extra just in case, but the bait were the only ones with any luck as we didn't kill any of them! We did see some boats catching fish, mainly billfish and tuna, but very spare.

My stories of Cabo fishing to my buddy went unfounded.
