FISHING THE IMAN BANK WITH
CAPT. OSVALDO OF THE MINJARES FLEET

Jan. 20, 2005, Paul Roos, Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

I went fishing at San Jose del Cabo with Capt. Osvaldo on his SUZY from the Tomas Cantor-booked Mijares Fleet on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2005. My neighbor, Gene Story, from Dolores, Colo., was the fishing buddy du jour. The day before was the end of 3-plus days of north wind, and the pangas had filled the fish boxes with dorado, tuna, and huachinango (red snapper).

Our fishing day dawned nicely, but we carried the "should have been here yesterday" feeling around until around 10 a.m.

We waited for the San Jose del Cabo fish bait sellers to make the long run up from Santa Maria Bay with sardinas, and then we made it north past Punta Gorda and up to the Cardon rock pile around 8:15 a.m.

The fishing had slim pickings on nothing but a small dorado (mahi-mahi) until we picked up and ran up and out to the Iman Bank, arriving about 10:30 a.m. The next two hours were pretty consistent fishing on football tuna to 15-pounds, dorado to 20 pounds, and huachinango to 10 pounds. We ended up with 4 yellowfin tuna, 5 dorado, and a half-dozen red snapper. Other San Jose del Cabo sportfishing boats scored similarly. Good sashimi and freezer fodder. The fishing water temperature is staying warmer and we're convinced down here that there is a mini El Nino happening. An El Ninito?
