RED SNAPPER AND HALIBUT FISHING AT THE 51-MILE REEF

Nov. 24, 2006, Art Pina, Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) fishing, Mexico:

Here is a Rocky Point fishing report from the weekend of November 18th.

Myself and 3 other buddies from work arrived in Rocky Point on the 18th. The day started out great. It was warm but a little breezy.

Both Mike Berry and his Pursuit and Curtis Grant with his Proline went out to a reef that's close by.

We only fished it a few hours but I caught a nice size halibut of about 18 pounds and a small grouper. I was fishing on Curtis's boat. Cort Monroe was fishing on Mikes Berry's boat and caught a halibut of about the same size.

On Sunday we started out for Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) 51-mile reef, and about 25 miles out of Rocky Point we all decided to turn back. It was a little rough and the wind seemed to be picking up. We finished the day fishing reefs close to town.

On Monday we tried it again and the wind was gone. Flat water greeted us and we then proceeded to make bait on the way out. Green backs were everywhere.

A couple of hours later we arrived and started our fishing adventure. Halibut seemed to be very hungry since they would hit everything we dropped. I caught 6 halibuts, biggest one 32 pounds, and red snappers were hitting our baits and jigs.

All in all, we all caught some real nice fish. That evening we took 2 red snappers I caught to Balboa's restaurant and they grilled them whole. What a treat that was. We all ate good and slept real sound.

Text day we went to the Rocky Point 51 mile reef again but the bite was not on.

The water temperature was 76 degrees. On both trips to the 51 mile reef, peanut dorado came up to the boats and gave us quite a show.

On the way back we did see a bait ball close to a mile long and 100 yards wide. It looked like sharks were all around it. Once again a great trip.
