FISH COUNTS FOR BLUE AND BLACK MARLIN ABOUT EVEN IN OFFSHORE WATERS

Aug. 2, 2004, Kurt Hjort, Esperanza Sportfishing, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Marlin Fishing Notes:

The boats hooking fish is probably about 80% but landing these big fish is a different story. The marlin are an equal mix of blues and black marlin with the black usually the bigger ones that we see. The blue marlin are usually smaller males in the 200-300lb range and those over 400 are usually females and blacks. The striped marlin have pretty much left the area by June although we do see a few through the summer. I think they prefer the cooler water but I am not sure. We just don't get the abundance of the stripers as cabo so luckily gets.
