EAST CAPE SPORTFISHING TRIP PRODUCES BAJA KAWAKAWA

Jan. 16, 2005, Russ Fritz, La Ribera, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico Sportfishing:

Yesterday was an odd day on the East Cape weatherwise. We had almost 100 percent overcast, with the sky and sea blending so evenly as to hide the horizon. Sporadically, there was a gentle puff of wind, but the sea glassed off, and the stillness took on a dead calm feeling that left us without typical reference points. Only 2 hotel boats fished, so even the usual, "cruiser on the horizon" was absent. It was the kind of day made for a Stephen King story.

Dark day, dark lures proved to be a good thumb rule, as a big bull dorado took a black and purple hoochie, as did a small hen a while later. With 10 kawakawa, and 2 dorado in the box, we headed home, leaving the only wake visible on the sea.

Kawakawa sushi proved to be some of the best I've eaten...ever.
