GOOD TUNA FISHING ABOARD THE EAST CAPE BOAT PETUNIA

Oct. 29, 2005, Lance Smith, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

My wife Tracey and I fished at East Cape on the Miss Petunia, Thursday, out of the Playa Del Sol.

There were mackerel for sale but most of the East Cape sportfishing fleet made giant squid for chum and bait.

We made the long run past the lighthouse, 52 miles from Playa, directly east of Cabo Pulmo.

About 40 miles out, we ran into a commercial seiner, Bastiges, and then found a pod of porpoise.

The first knockdown was on a cedar plug, a yellowfin tuna 30 pounds. The next one, also on cedar, went 35 pounds.

The third fish on the 8-inch jet head, Mexican Flag, was estimated to be 100 pounds.

A couple of more on the chunked squid, 30 pounds and 40 pounds, and we called it a day.

East Cape fishing boats heading north to the 88 also came back with good numbers but they didn't seem as large.

Lots of sailfish and a few marlin were in the mix for the others we spoke to.
