SOME YELLOWFIN TUNA CAUGHT IN GENERALLY SLOW EAST CAPE FISHING THIS WEEK

April 22-28, 2005, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:

East Cape Sportfishing Charters 197. Anglers 532. Total Fish 357. Fish/Charter 1.81. Fish/Angler .67. Striped Marlin 85. Sailfish 31. Dorado 29. Yellowfin Tuna 170. Pargo 20 Wahoo 1. Pompano 3. Roosterfish 12. Sierra 4. Water Temperature 69-75. Air Temperature 91-61. Winds calm in the a.m. with slight breeze developing in the p.m.

East Cape fishing was slow for most of the week. The good news is that the fishing kicked in nicely over the last few days with some yellowfin tuna coming in, as well as several nice Dodos and a few dozen or so Sailfish making an appearance. That together with a nice Striped Marlin bite late in the week salvaged what would have otherwise been an absolutely dismal week of fishing at East Cape.

We saw air temperatures climb slightly to a range of 61-91, and a fishing water temperature range of 69-75 degrees. There was very little wind to speak of so at East Cape that's another good sign of things to come. Bait-wise, we've got mackerel.

Striped Marlin continued to make a nice showing, with East Cape anglers reporting some fun to the north off Punta Pescadero, 10-12 miles, vicinity of the shark buoy stops, straight off Los Barriles, 36-40 miles, as well as to the south off La Ribera, 4-14 miles.

The overall catch rate among billfish was about 22 percent. Most of the outside action occurred as a result of anglers chasing the Tuna bite. Mackerel and various lures did the trick there.

The Dorado bite at East Cape remained inconsistent for yet another week. The upside of that is that there are some real nice Dorado being landed when anglers can find them.

The week certainly started off slow regarding Yellowfin tuna fishing. However, it picked up nicely over the latter part of the reporting week. The overall catch rate for Yellowfin Tuna was about 32 percent.
