LA PAZ ANGLERS FISH FOR DORADO DURING TRIP TO EAST CAPE

Aug. 16, 2004, Torrance Eddy, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

On Sunday, a friend and I set out from La Paz toward Buena Vista for some Dorado Action. Those who were properly prepared did very well. We were not in that group, unfortunately. The fish were about 2 miles off of La Ribera. They were from 10 to 20 pounds. And I had one on from a pink and white hootchie for about ten seconds. And a few other heavy but very short strikes. Those who did well were using live bait. I don't know whether they were Mackerel or Sardenas. We only had Squid strips.

Our only deep water triumphs were a double on needle fish. Later in the day we caught five nice trigger fish from 2-3 pounds. So we had some good eating fish to take home. Over the radio we learned that Yellowfin footballs were being taken in large numbers off punta Colorado.

As to where to launch, for my Isuzu Trooper and and unusual small boat, we should have gone to Verdugos to launch and let them take the trailer to the water with their tractor. We got stuck in the sand but did get our trailer near the water's edge. The only vehicle that handled the sand well was a Toyota truck with very large wide tires.

After some friendly Mexicans pulled our Vehicle free, they took us fishing for about six hours on a 22 ft Panga with console and Bimini Top. It seems, Sunday is fun day for Pangeros who don't have fishermen from the resorts. We got along so well with this Pangero that he said for well less than resort rates, he would take us any Sunday he was free. So my boat never got wet.

Needless to say, we took down his name and phone number.
