HISTORY AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE LOCAL
BAJA FISHING TOURNAMENT AT LA RIBERA

Aug. 22, 2004, Jorge Bergin, La Ribera, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Several times the organizers of this local Baja fishing tournament stole the money, some events had no entrants, everybody abuses the time limits. The year I won the event (no entry fee, a simple trophy for the winner) I caught a 50 lb dorado. There were 5 entrants, no billfish. Almost got into a fist fight with the mayor to get my trophy at 2 AM at the dance. The pangas and super pangas run up onto the beach with or without fish at the end of the tourney. The cruisers stand off a few yards, have the fish floated in for the weigh-in. No organizer, parent, beach guard is in or near the water. No adults are in or near the water to clear the staging, haul area of scores of tiny children frolicking in the water at the shore. I left early cause I just couldn't stand to watch it. These Baja kids would be in less danger on the streets of Pamplona on Bull Run day.
