SOLMAR SKIPPER OF THE WEEK IS CAPT. JOSE CECNA
OF THE SPORTFISHING BOAT SOLMAR III

July 2-8, 2005, Benjamin Ortega, Solmar Fleet, Cabo San Lucas, Baja Sur fishing report, Mexico:

With release of another blue marlin, this one estimated to weigh 250 to 260 pounds, hardcore billfishermen are looking forward to a lengthy Cabo San Lucas season for these powerful gamefish.

This blue marlin was caught on a live mackerel by Mike Massey of Paola, KS, who fished the San Lucas VI off Punta Arena, at the edge of the Sea of Cortez.

Striped marlin continue to be a pit picky in the Cabo San Lucas fishing vacation area, as sea temperatures climb with the onset of hot and humid weather in the Cabo region.

There were, of course, the usual exceptions, like Marty Ward's catch of two stripers and a 26-pound yellowfin tuna on a yellow, pink and orange lure trolled behind the Solmar I off Punta Palmilla.

The Jaime Bank produced some pretty wild action for Oscar and Claudia Cordova of El Paso, TX. They put the grunt to a single striper, 32 yellowfin and three giant squid in the 30-pound class on both live mackerel and lures fished from the Cabo San Lucas charter sportfishing boat Solmar III.

Matthew Carlson of Portland, OR, noted on his catch report that the 153-pound striped marlin he caught on live mackerel was the "most memorable trip I have ever taken." He was most effusive in praising the crew of the Solmar IV for their effort. The fish was taken off the Gordo Banks.

John Robinson and Tyler Greenberg of Danville, CA, tapped the Jaime Bank for a single striper, in what they remarked otherwise was a slow day. They caught the marlin on a live mackerel while fishing from the Solmar IV.

Captain of the week honors went to Jose Cecna, of the Solmar III, who in six outings produced nine striped marlin, 42 yellowfin tuna, six dorado, two roosterfish and three giant squid for his passengers.

The total Cabo San Lucas sportfishing catch by the Solmar fleet for the week including releases was 39 striped marlin, 62 yellowfin tuna, three giant squid, 14 sierra and four roosterfish.
