San Quintin, Mexico:
Halibut, Calico Bass And Yellowtail Plentiful In Fishing At San Martin Island

June 8, 2005, Julio Meza, Santa Monica, San Quintin, Baja sportfishing, Mexico:

Last Saturday, Alma Barba and I put my boat Santa Monica on the water by the Old Mill at San Quintin around 7:30 p.m. and with the help of all the electronics we drove the boat to San Martin Island where we spent the night.

Early in the morning we found good yellowtail fishing action with surface jigs on the south side of the island for three, 15 to 18-pound forkies, by 8:30 a.m. Fishing the kelp around San Martin Island with swim baits we caught and released good numbers of calico bass up to 6 pounds, and trolling Rapalas, by noon we landed a little 13-pound yellowtail.

Some San Quintin sportfishing boats landed halibut inside the bay and at San Martin Island during the weekend, and some yellowtail were caught trolling live bait between San Martin Island and Ben's Rock. No white seabass were reported at San Quintin and there was no offshore action.

Water temperatures on the south side of the island were at 59 degrees, 60 degrees on the north side. The day was overcast with heavy fog by noon.
