San Quintin, Mexico:
Big Humboldt Squid Are Caught At The 240 Spot

June 11, 2005, Sarai Garcia, Don Eddie's Landing, San Quintin, Baja fishing, Mexico:

Heavy marine layers have persisted all week during the mornings in the San Quintin sportfishing area, and they gave way in the afternoons to sunshine. Air temperatures averaged highs 67 and lows of 61 degrees, winds in the mornings at 12 knots northwest, and 18 knots northwest in the afternoons.

Waves off San Quintin were pretty steady at 2 feet, swells at 6 feet. Near shore, San Quintin fishing waters have been murky with a greenish color, and water temperatures averaging 59 degrees in the following fishing spots, San Martin Island, 180 spot, and Ben's Rock. Further out around 28 miles the water temperature was 61 degrees and waters were clean.

Brent Kimball and a group of friends from Southern California decided to stay a few hours in San Quintin, rented a panga, and headed to the 240 spot. For the minimum time they stayed fishing, they got a pretty good catch of reds, bocaccio, a huge Humboldt squid, and topping it off, a couple of good sized halibut inside San Quintin bay.

The rest of the fishing outings at San Quintin were pretty much the same this week. We are catching rockcods, whitefish, bocaccio, and a good number of sheepheads, ranging up to 10 lbs. The hotels have been filled to capacity. We advise those who are planning to visit the San Quintin vacation area to make reservations as soon as possible.

Don't forget our Don Eddie's fishing tournaments that will occur July 2-3, and September 3-4. Please reserve your pangas early.
