San Quintin, Mexico:
A Slow Fishing Day In Dark Green Water

April 22, 2005, Julio Meza, San Quintin sportfishing, Baja California, Mexico:

On Thursday, April 21, 2005, I fished out of San Quintin on my boat Santa Monica, with the Coca Cola guys, Rodolfo Lara and Idelfonso. This was a very slow fishing day at San Quintin. The water was very dark green, and there were small baits everywhere. The water temperature in the fishing area was 58 degrees, with foggy, choppy conditions in the morning, and calm by noon.

First we tried fishing at the San Quintin 15 spot for yellowtail, but we only landed small red rockcod and lingcod. Then we fished the fake 15 spot, then the 6 spot, but there was no sign of the forkies.

By 11 a.m., we were fishing at San Martin Island north of San Quintin, using Rapalas, but nothing hit our lures. By noon, we dropped swim baits on the north side of the island and Rodolfo landed a nice yellowtail. They were mixed with bonita in the fishing area. On the way back to San Quintin, we fished the west side of San Martin Island for slow calico bass action.

Local fishermen at San Quintin have been catching the usual good numbers of bottom fish.
