San Quintin, Mexico:
Weather Conditions Keep Sportfishing Charter Boats Ashore

Feb. 20, 2005, Pete Hillis, Pedro's Pangas, San Quintin, Baja fishing, Mexico:

On Sunday, Capt. Hector of the Rommy said most San Quintin sportfishing boats were kept in during the week due to winds and rains. Boats did get out Saturday, picked up yellowtail and lingcod at the 15 and 240 spots. One San Quintin boat went to San Martin Island bass fishing, all catch and release.

The fish count included nice calicos with some barracuda and bonito mixed in from the surface. As of this writing, four of our boats were in the water and so it looks good for the Monday holiday. The heavy winds and rain stopped Friday evening at San Quintin. We are looking forward to a great week of fishing.

It is best to drive in to San Quintin Bay from Mex 1 on the Papalote road.

Papalote is the first small town past the main entrance off Highway 1 for the Old Mill. It consists of higher grounds with passable roads. There are posted signs along the main highway for turnoffs for Papalote and then as you travel in from the main road, there are additional signs directing you to the Old Mill, Old Pier, and Don Eddie's. This detour will add approximately 30 minutes to your drive time.

Feb. 13, 2005, Pete Hillis, Pedro's Pangas, San Quintin, Mexico Fishing Report:

Wind and rain pretty much shut down everything this week at San Quintin. Four fishing boats made it out. All San Quintin boats went bottom fishing with limits of reds and lings. By telephone as of Sunday, 6 a.m., winds and rain had completely stopped. Two boats were heading for the 15 fathom and 240 spot to find yellowtail.

Travel advisory: When heading off of Highway 1, they should take the detour through Papalote. The main road is pretty bad.
