MIXED SPECIES LIMITS FOR BOTTOM FISH, PLUS WHITE SEABASS AND HALIBUT

June 5, 2004, Lorenzo Biedebach, Campo Lorenzo, San Quintin, Baja California, Mexico fishing:

We really don't fish too much during the windy season. Things are starting to change for the better and all of the "stuff" is just about fixed. This year I had to change motors in both of my boats here in San Quintin. Boy, those four-stroke outboards are really sweet.

Anyway, we had some pretty nice days this week at San Quintin, and caught some fish.

Muchachas Robin Backer and Julie Parkes of Alta Loma did well fishing El Socorro area south of San Quintin for limits of sandbass, reds, and calicos, with a 22-pound white seabass and 16-pound halibut just to embarrass me. All fish were caught on blue and black Fish Traps.

Oscar Santana and brother Vick from San Diego, using cut squid, filled their sacks with big reds (rockcod) fishing the high spots (325 to 400 feet deep) 3 miles N/W of San Martin Island.

Gerry Goree, Fred Suhr, Paul Dilger from Campo Lorenzo, San Quintin, took all their weekend guests south to the Rio Hondo area for some wide open sand bass and calico action. All fish were taken on plastics and Krocks. Unfortunately, the gill netters have been working this area pretty hard and all but wiped out the white seabass.

Hope to see everyone in July at Julio's San Quintin fishing tournament. I'm headed back to Loreto, but will probably fly up to compete (maybe I can win a raffle prize). Julio came by the other day and showed me the poster. Good job! My only suggestion would be to remind all anglers to have current Mexican fishing licenses and boat permits. Sometimes fishing licenses are available in San Quintin, but based on Julio's estimates, with respect to the turn out, I wouldn't rely on getting a license in San Quintin. Boat permits are only available in Ensenada--nada aqui! As you know, it's really easy and extremely smart for us to be legal in Mexico at all times!
