COMMERCIAL TRAWLERS FISHING AROUND ISLA SAN LUIS

Nov. 28, 2005, John Tillander, Punta Bufeo, San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico fishing:

I got back yesterday from 9 days at Punta Bufeo, Baja California, Mexico. The water temperature was 76 degrees, air temperature highs of 78 and lows of 60.

We had a couple of days of wind at first, then the last 6 days the pond was dead calm and the fishing was great.

we were fishing from a boat. Trolling and casting into the rocks with small Kastmasters and Krocodiles. We stayed along the rocks between Punta Bufeo and Papa Fernandez's place and caught Pompano, up to 2 pounds, Barracuda, some really nice Cabrilla, up to 5 pounds, and lots of Spotted Bay Bass up to 1 pound.

The commercial fishing trawlers were all around Isla San Luis and the other islands so we didn't bother going out there, but we had reports that there were some nice Yellowtail out there.

The Federales are checking fishing boats around the Enchanted Islands for totoaba and they are not using the regular Mexican Government boats. At least three pangas were caught in the past month or so with totoaba on board and the pangas were confiscated along with all the fishing equipment. The boat owners were jailed. By using the confiscated pangas the Federales are able to approach before the illegal fish could be dumped over the side.
