75-POUND WAHOO CAUGHT DURING SPORTFISHING BOAT CRUISE TO LORETO

June 11, 2005, Sean Lawley, Deal Maker, San Carlos, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:

I fished out of San Carlos, on a four-day trip, aboard my boat Deal Maker, with Barry Albrecht, both of us from Sierra Vista, Arizona.

On May 21, 2005, we caught an estimated 75 pound wahoo caught somewhere south of Mulege on our 4 day outing from San Carlos, Sonora, to Loreto. We were lucky not to lose it as were we fishing without steel leader and caught it perfectly in the mouth.

Water temperatures were around 78 degrees and the seas were flat.

We really had a slow 4 days overall. We headed out of San Carlos and trolled to San Juanico. We caught a few small dorados on different trolled lures. Black and purple seemed to be the most effective, though we use a lot of green/white, blue/white, and petroleros. We caught and released a small blue marlin and a striper on the trip as well.

We were looking for warm water out of San Carlos. It was about 75 degrees and my XM weather showed warmer water south of San Carlos, east and south of Mulege.

We hooked up North of Carmen Island, South of San Juanico. That is the area we fished in for a couple of days. We anchored at Carmen one night and San Juanico one night and fished between the two. We were hoping to find some tuna but I think the warm water has them moved somewhere else. None to be found between San Carlos and Loreto at that time and I think it is the same today.

We tried to troll Rapalas at Carmen but had no luck getting any groupers. We were successful in loosing about 6 lures to the bottom before we decided to go back out and catch fish in deep water!
