CHARTERS FISHING AT CORBETENA AND EL BANCO

July 10, 2005, Kurt Hjort, Esperanza Sportfishing, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Fishing Report:

The fishing here in Puerto Vallarta has stayed strong with big yellowfin tuna dominating the story.

El Banco and Corbeteña have been the spots to target the larger fish. Capt Freddy on the classic Bertram "MAGNIFICO" caught a tuna of over 500 pounds (to be submitted for record) on Wednesday, and his client followed up with two more over 250 pounds fishing this week.

On Saturday, I saw 2 tunas hung up of over 300 pounds and heard of several more that broke off.

The "MADONNA" landed two blue marlin in the 250 pound range at Corbeteña on Tuesday and reported a lot of action on sails closer in at El Moro, with 3 releases to finish up the day.

We fished Monday and Wednesday with Javier Barba of Guadalajara and released 2 sails Monday and lost one and landed 2 small dorado on Wednesday.

The dorado have not shown up yet in the Puerto Vallarta sportfishing area, but recent rains will change that.

Water temperatures in the mid 80s will help us through the summer and the clarity has been very good with blue water just outside the bay, and even seeing small dorado and some sails inside the bay where the clean water and green water meet.

I was diving inside the bay towards Yelapa on the south side on Thursday and saw some school size tuna, 10-20 pounds, so the half-day trips fishing inside the bay also have a good shot at some quality fishing.

Wahoo also make their appearance this time of year and can be found at the bank, Corbeteña, and just outside the islands near underwater structure. Early fast trolled jet heads along with a fast, deep running plug will get these speedsters to hit.

The fishing weather at Puerto Vallarta has been consistent with warm, humid days and some thundershowers at night, but typically sunny to partly cloudy days and fairly calm conditions all last week.
