FISHING BOATS FINDING GOOD ACTION FOR 3 TO 4 BILLFISH PER DAY

June 17, 2005, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Mazatlan, Mexico Fishing Report:

The billfish averages remain high in the Mazatlan vacation area, with some of Mazatlan fishing boats producing 3-4 billfish per day, and the inshore fishing is red-hot for the red snapper.

The largest fish for the week was taken by angler Lonny Lightfoot, Walla Walla, Wash., a 280 pound blue marlin, fishing aboard the "Aries III".

Overall counts reflected 1 blue marlin, 15 stripers, (11 released) 21 sailfish, (18 released) 18 yellowfin tuna, and 1 dorado, for 28 fishing days.

Angler Jeff Moulten, Huntington Beach, CA, released 4 sailfish for 1 Mazatlan fishing day, aboard the "Aries V".

Three super panga days produced more than 80 red snapper.

Mazatlan climate along Mexico's central Pacific coast had 69-degree nights to 86 daytime highs, mostly sunny and warm. Sea conditions had 77 degrees inshore to 78 offshore, afternoon breezes to 14 knots with light wind chop. The best fishing area at Mazatlan was 20 miles due south of the Marina El Cid. Rigged trolling baits were the hot item for the billfish, and feathers and cedar plugs for the yellowfin tuna.
