FLY FISHING OBSERVATIONS DURING TRIP OUT OF VILLAS DE LORETO

July 16, 2004, Stan Woodward, Loreto, Mexico Fishing out of Villas de Loreto:

Lots of fisherman going down on Aero Testosterone that was for sure...love the guys with the 8,000 QT coolers, like dorado keep in the walk in freezer for years.

I can confirm the log jam at the ramp every morning and bait was sold out by 5:30am, but it was not too hard to make outside the marina.

Friday we ran North of Coronado in a very uncomfortable sea, lot of current. We found a half submerged gas can along with another panga and had a great time for about an hour, catching seven dorado with the biggest about 30# but five at 10-12#.

But then we were swarmed on by a flotilla of "mosca chuckers" whose pangas circled the gas can, cut their engines and all started blind casting in their LL Bean attire, some complete with white gloves. I expected Martha Stewart to show on a bow flippin' her Clouser! The bite turned off and we went elsewhere for nada.

Fly fishermen at the Villas were happy to catch one per man....REALLY HAPPY!

Saturday was the same routine but we ran North and the beautiful offshore blue of the day before had rolled to WSB green, and the dorado were nowhere to be found. We trolled as far North as Punta Pulpito and pretty far offshore without so much as a zinger. We threw macks at a few sailfish with no luck. Not what I expected in July.

Some guests at the Villas with private boats had good fishing the couple days before we got to town, including a great story of finding a big paddy on Thursday with hundreds of fish underneath. They said they had 29 pieces of bait and caught fish on everyone, then chunks and jigs worked...had the paddy all to themselves. Good for them. All in all it was fun and warm.

Stayed at Villas. We fished with a panguero named Abel on Friday, and Goyo Murillo the next day. We caught 7 dorado on Friday, nada the next day. Villas was full.
