GIANT SQUID CAUGHT A FEW MILES OUT

June 18, 2004, Larry Parker, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:

Just got back from Loreto and am happy to report that despite some windy and rough days on Monday the 14th and Wednesday the 16th, I was able to catch limits of dorado on all four days I fished.

It appeared that most of the fishermen we spoke to were having the same experience, with wide-open bites available when fish are found.

A continued bite on Yellowtail, big Amberjack (one of three caught on different days by new friend Lyle Osborne of Costa Mesa weighed in at 67 lbs.), tons of Sailfish, and a few Marlin were caught while we were there.

Humbolt giant squid are available in the normal spots a few miles off shore, and my son Jeremy and his wife Cowie did some inshore fishing off of Coronado for big Snappers to 22lbs (Pargo) and mucho grande Triggerfish, Cabrilla, and Pinto Bass.

My brother-in-law, Marty Stockstell of Yucca Valley, caught the largest Dorado in our group--50lbs. He also spent 2 days chasing huge Roosterfish on the beaches of Isla Coronado, but couldn't get any to eat the Mackerel bait.

By the way, the baits are smaller right now. Bring plenty of 3/0, 4/0, and 5/0 hooks to accommodate these Mackerel, which are perfect sized for the Dorado.
