DORADO HITTING ON FLYLINED SARDINA BAITS

June 18, 2004, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:

Loreto Dorado fishing is still very good...most of the herds have moved south of where they had been during most of the past week. You'll find them if you follow the vectors that line up the "three kings" over Punta Perico and Coronado behind Punta Lobos.... approximately 5-8 miles off the centerline between Punta Perico and Punta Lobos. Just look for the other boats.

Yesterday word at Loreto was that hooked flylined live sardinas worked better than trolled mackerel for getting the Dorado. Chumming to attract schools of fish is a technique the fly anglers employ, and now you see that it also works for meat fishermen. With the Vagabundos del Mar tournament coming up at Loreto, keep your eyes and ears open to methods that you haven't tried before. Toss sardinas to attract schools to your boat like the fly fishermen do, and cast your lures, or hooked sardinas on light tackle to them. You'll probably outfish the trollers if you do this. If you're in a tournament...this is a hot tip.

Loreto Captain Francisco Munoz' son Manuel caught two Dorado yesterday. Manuel caught another large Dorado taken 8 miles off the centerline of Punta Lobos and Perico. 18 June, 2004

From the other Loreto "front" at the offshore bajo de Punta Lobos there are Dorado, Sailfish and Marlin and there are plenty of them. Loreto water is a consistent 85 degrees. They are being caught on the troll with live bait for the most part, but trolling feathers, marlin lures, and the like will also work.

Loreto fishing is HOT, HOT, HOT, right now.

Loreto Inshore & Structure Fishing: Thirty and fourty pound Jack Crevalle are still schooling and feeding off Punta Baja (the southernmost tip of Isla Carmen).

Inside Puerto Escondido, Captain Francisco Munoz got into a large school of Roosterfish in the 15-20 pound size range on Friday, and I hear reports of similar from residents at Tripui. There are lots of Roosterfish from 10 to 30+ pounds at San Basilio. These will take a slow trolled live mullet very readily.

Loreto continues to have a good bite on Cabrilla and Pargo. Both species will readily take a trolled Rapala type lure trolled along the shorelines or iron jigged down deep. They will go for squid too and you will have much success on squid when you find a good hole to fish.
