SCHOOL OF LARGE JACK CREVALLE SEEN SOUTH OF LORETO'S ISLA CATALAN

June 10, 2004, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:

Here's some great news that I probably shouldn’t let out, but since you’re paying me I’ll keep to my duty.

On the way back in to port from the Isla Catalana area, Loreto’s Bill Erhardt (Marlin and Wahoo catcher) saw a huge school of jack crevalle feeding off Punta Baja (Isla Carmen’s southern tip). He estimated them at 30-40 pounds! YEAH!! This report was confirmed by Captain Fidel Alcaide Garcia of Loreto who was also in that area yesterday. When I instructed my captains (including Fidel) to take our fly anglers there to fish and target the Jacks, Fidel looked at me in surprise and asked, “how did you know about those fish?”

In Loreto inshore interests, Cabrilla and Pargo are readily available for the taking. Just go and find yourself a nice reef to park over and drop in some bait. Squid, mackerel, sardines…or cast some lures like chrome Krocodiles, fish traps, or jig iron in the deep water or cast flies into shallower water.

Squid have appeared off the northern portions of Isla Coronado. They are beaching themselves on the first beach on the left-hand side as you enter the bay to the main white sand beach. They seem to do this every year at Loreto. They are from 18 to 28 inches in length. It is a good sign of things to come when we have these squid, the Dorado will certainly follow them in.
