Ronco callana
(Haemulopsis axillaris)

Fish Identification Photos: Yellowstripe Grunt, Haemulopsis axillaris: The Yellowstripe Grunt is characterized by its streamlined shape, overall silver appearance, strong lateral line, and faint brownish stripes running from front to back.

The Yellowstripe Grunt is quite similar in appearance to the Sharpnose Grunt, the Silver Grunt and the White Grunt, which also live in similar locations.

In Mexico, the Yellowstripe Grunt is found on the Pacific Coast of the Baja California peninsula north to about Laguna San Ignacio, north to at least Loreto on Baja's Sea of Cortez coast, and on the mainland south to Guatemala.

It grows to one foot in length, but the half-foot models are more common. It is found in sandy mud flats in the first 50 feet of the water column.

The Yellowstripe Grunt is simply too small and too rare to be deemed of any significant food value.

The Yellowstripe Grunt is one of several similar grunts, of the Haemulidae or Grunt Family, which are hard to differentiate.
