White Gorgonian
Blanco Gorgonian
(Muricea Sp.)
Identification Photos: White Gorgonian, Muricea Sp.: The White Gorgonian is a striking member of the Gorgonidae Family.
However, it is very different from most Gorgonian corals since the branches generate as small round clumps (versus flat in one plane) originating from a single holdfast.
The White Gorgonian has white polyps and in some phases has red toward the ends of the branches.
It grows up to 10 inches and can be wider than it is tall.
The White Gorgonian is found on vertical rock faces.
Details about where it is found are exceedingly limited in relation to substrate, current, and ocean depth.
The White Gorgonian's range within Mexican waters is also unknown.
From a scientific perspective little is known about this soft coral.

Disclaimer: This identification should be considered tentative due to the very remote location of the collection (Latitude 23 degree 1 minute North and Longitude 109 degrees 3 minutes West) and the water depth cited. We believe there has been very little scientific focus on this area of the world and therefore supporting scientific documentation is not available.
