Striped Sea Chub, Blue Bronze Sea Chub

Fish Identification Photos: Striped Sea Chub, Blue Bronze Sea Chub, Kyphosus analogus: This fish is characterized by its narrow brassy pinstripes and the yellow line under its eyes.
The Striped Sea Chub also has characteristic low anal an dorsal fins of uniform height. It is quite similar to and can be easily confused with the Cortez Chub, Kyophosus elegans, which has stripes that are not as conspicuous, and an alternate polka dot color phase, and higher, larger anal and dorsal fins.
The Striped Sea Chub is a member of the Kyphosidae or Sea Chub, Nibbler, and Halfmoon Family.
The Striped Sea Chub is found on both coasts of Baja California, on the Pacific coast of mainland Mexico, and at all offshore islands, including the Tres Marias and Revillagigedos. It swims in small schools along shallow rocky shores.
Other chub-like species found in Mexicn waters include: the California Halfmoon, Medialuna californiensis; the Cortez Sea Chub, Kyphosus elegans; the Rainbow Sea Chub, Sectator ocyurus; and the Zebra Sea Chub, Hermosilla azurea..
The Striped Sea Chub is reported to reach 18 inches in length and 2.5 pounds in weight.
It is found in water up to 60 feet deep and is not abundant. It has a primarily herbivorous diet, but also feeds on plankton and benthic invertebrates.

Striped Sea Chub, Kyphosus analogus: Caught at this location, at Km. 14 (Twin Dolphins), between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, from the beach, in the last hour of daylight, in February 2003, in 72-degree water outside the breaker line, in 20 to 30-foot deep water, utilizing 15-pound test line, with a two-dropper loop rig (no swivels), 1.5-ounce bank sinker, and Mustad 92553 hooks, size #4, on cut squid. Size approximately 14 inches and 1.5 pounds, and a very energetic fighter. The Blue Bronze Chub is viewed by locals as excellent table fare. Description and photo courtesy John Snow.
