Sand Perches, (Serranidae): The Sand Perches are members of the Serranidae Family which is very large in size and also includes Bacalasos, Basslets, Cabrillas, Camolillos, Coneys, Grasbys, Groupers, Hamlets, Hinds, Leather Basses, Reef Basses, Sea Basses, Serranos, Soapfishes, Splittail Basses and Threadfin Basses.
Globally, there are approximately 450 members of this family in 68 genera, of which species from 14 genera are found in Mexican fishing waters. Of these 38 individual members live in the Sea of Cortez. They range in size from the colossal (approaching 9 feet in length and 900 pounds) to tiny fish less than 2 inches in length.
The Sand Perches are all from the Genus Diplectrum and have moderately compressed elongated bodies with a complete lateral line. They have a characteristic bony cheek spine (preoperculum) with large spines. They have small rough scales except for the area between the eyes. They have low dorsal fins with ten spines. The caudal fins are semi-lunar to forked; the pelvic fins are inserted before the pectoral fins.
Globally there are 12 known members of the Diplectrum Genus of which 8 are found in Mexico fishing areas.
