Marlin Remora, Remora osteochir: The Marlin Remora is an easy species to identify as the coloration is a uniform dark brown and it is only found attached to marlin.
The Marlin Remora has an elongated body, long head, and a long disk, 35 to 36 percent of the body length with 17 to 20 rows of plates, that reaches beyond the pectoral fins. The anal and dorsal fin bases are of equal length being twice the length of the head.
The caudal fin of the adult Marlin Remora is straight but forked in juveniles, as pictured below. The pectoral fins are medium in size and blunt, and the pelvic fins are pointed. Based on the sucker to body length ratio, the number of plates on the disk, and the host it travels with, the Marlin Remora cannot be confused with other remoras.
This fish species reaches a maximum length of 15 inches.
It is found in all Mexican fishing waters with the exception of the upper 25 percent of the Sea of Cortez.
The Marlin Remora is a member of the Echeneidae Family which are known in Mexico as rémoras. The family has four members, all of which frequent Mexican waters. They have slender bodies and equal sized and opposite anal and dorsal fins. The Remoras are sea-going hitchhikers that attach themselves to large migratory hosts via a sucking disk, comprised of a series of transverse plates, located on top of the head.
They maintain a symbiotic relationship with the host, providing a parasitic cleaning service in exchange for a fast joy ride which they need for survival and an ample supply of food that is provided as a by-product from the host during dining. The Remoras are the subjects of ancient Greek mythology being blamed for losses of battles since they are known to attach themselves to ships creating drag and thus slowing navigational speeds. Very little is known about the biology of the Remoras due to the need for the presence of fast moving water for survival, making study in captivity impossible.
