(Haemulon steindachneri)

Fish Identification Photos: Latin Grunt, Haemulon steindachneri: The Latin Grunt has a silver appearance with narrow oblique brownish bars on the sides that follow the scale rows. It has yellow fins.

A key to identification of the Latin Grunt is a characteristic prominent black spot at the base of the tail (as pictured below).

The Latin Grunt can be easily confused with the Cortez Grunt, Haemulon flaviguttatum (no black spot at the tail base), and possibly the Spottail Grunt, Haemulon maculicauda (overall dark gray appearance with pale lines on sides and with gray anal and dorsal fins).

The Latin Grunt reaches a maximum length of 12 inches and is generally found in sandy areas adjacent to rocks in the first 225 feet of the water column.

In Mexican waters the Latin Grunt is found south of Magdalena Bay on the Pacific coast of Baja California, throughout the Sea of Cortez, and along the coast of the Mexican mainland south to Guatemala. It is a nocturnal feeder, making daylight collection rare.

The Latin Grunt is a member of the Haemulidae Family which are known in Mexico as burros.
