Green Blenny
Trambollo Verde, Trambollo Listado
(Labrisomus striatus)

Green Blenny, Labrisomus striatsi: The Green Blenny has two colorations, with the males being green and the females red-brown. The Green Blenny is characterized by a series of longitudinal lines and large dark red-brown spots scattered on the sides (as pictured below). It has a yellowish colored head with a pair of brown bands across the cheek. A key to identification is that the first dorsal spine is short.

The Green Blenny is a shallow water, diurnal (daytime), highly territorial predator that feeds mostly on bethic crustaceans including small crabs. It is found in the first 30 feet of the water column over and within weed covered rocky structure.

This fish species reaches a maximum length of just over 2 inches.

The Green Blenny is most likely confused with the Largemouth Blenny (large mouth, numerous white spots on the lower part of the head and body).

Distribution in Mexico fishing areas

In Mexican fishing waters the Green Blenny has a limited distribution, being found in the lower half of the Sea of Cortez and along the coast of the Mexican mainland south to Guatemala. It is absent from along the Pacific side of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and from around the oceanic islands. Due to its size and rarity the Green Blenny is of limited interest to most.

It is a member of the Labrisomidae Family whose members are known in Mexico as trambollos. The labrisomids form the largest and most diverse group of blennioid fishes found in Mexican waters. They are small fishes characterized by having prominent head cirri, well-developed scales, conical jaw teeth and drab colorations. They are highly secretive bottom dwellers that stay close to shelter. At present there are approximately 100 species of Labrisomids known globally of which 23 species are found in Mexican waters. The Green Blenny is of the Labrisomus Genus of which there are 17 known species of which five are found in Mexican waters.
