Black Sea Fan
Negro Mar Abanico, Arbolitos del Mar
(Antipathidae fiordensis)

Identification Photos: Black Sea Fan, Antipathidae fiordensis: The Black Sea Fan is a Black Coral and a member of the Antipathidae Family. It has a growth pattern whereby all branches grow in a random plane, originating from a single holdfast and a single stem, which branches significantly.

They grow in size to 18 inches and are generally much taller than they are wide. Details are lacking about where they are found in relation to substrate, current, and ocean depths. The range within Mexican waters is also unknown. From a scientific perspective, little is known about this soft coral.

Black Sea Fan Photo 2

Black Sea Fan, Antipathidae fiordensis: Both collections shown here were made while bottom fishing. Caught with Capt. Pata in the panga Salomé, 25 miles north of La Playita, San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur, Mexico, in 73-degree water, in April 2003, in 100-foot deep water, on a traditional yo-yo iron. Size, approximately 18 inches and 12 inches, respectively.

Disclaimer: This identification should be considered tentative due to the water depth cited and the very remote location of the collection (Latitude 23 degrees 1 minute North and Longitude 109 degrees 3 minutes West). We believe there has been very little scientific focus on this area of the world and therefore supporting scientific documentation is not available. We welcome additional information on this coral from anyone who cares to contact us. Description and photos courtesy of John Snow.
