PANGA FISHING WITH CAPTAIN UBALDO OF CASTRO'S CAMP

June 27, 2006, Fishing with Capt. Ubaldo of Castro's Camp, Chris Kugel:

I arrived at Castro's Camp on Thursday the 22nd. The weather was warm and windless. Fernando Castro had 9 boats out fishing and the did real well on the rock fish with "very good" quality and numbers.

Friday was warm but the west wind came up in the afternoon and the boats returning from the Punta Colonet area got a little wet. The fishing was still great. Some Yellowtail were seen and some bonita were caught.

Saturday was warm and cloudy with lots of rockfish.

I went out fishing on Sunday. It was very tropical with warm humid weather and light rain showers but flat water. I fished with Capt. Ubaldo of Castro's Camp and we went down to the Colonet area. We fished in 125 to 140 feet of water and caught nice red rockcods and I lucked out and caught a 30 pound halibut. We finished the day in front of Castro's Camp with some Barracuda and Calicos.

On the trip from Colonet to the Castro's Camp, I was fortunate enough to see my first Leatherback Turtle. It was huge, best guess 600 to 700 pounds. We stayed about 100 feet away and just marveled at its size. About the time I started digging for my camera she dove and that was that.
