FISHING IN WINDY CONDITIONS PRODUCES 4 YELLOWTAIL

June 4, 2005, Steve Ross, Bad Dog, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico:

Fishing out of Ensenada on Saturday, Steve and Gail Ross departed on their boat "Bad Dog" from Marina Coral with marinero "Jando" at 05:00 in a stiff 10 knot wind for Mike Richardson's Ensenada Live Bait. Mike provided medium sized anchovies and mackerel.

Todos Santos Bay's water was a green 62 degrees with a rough 5-foot swell making the run and shoot game almost impossible. How rough was it? One Mexican party boat reported immediately returning to the Ensenada dock with many sea sick passengers.

The early morning provided pods of yellowtail blowing up under birds outside of the Bajo San Miguel. Four yellowtail to 22 pounds and 12 log barracuda were caught, returning to the dock by 1:00 p.m. There were no other Ensenada fishing boats in that area. One reason was that it was bad weather, combining continuous wind and large swells. The Ensenada Clipper and Shir-Lee anchored and fished at Todos Santos Island. By 09:00 the yellowtail disappeared.
