COASTAL KAYAK FISHING TRIP TO ENSENADA'S LA BUFADORA

July 16, 2004, Dennis Spike, Coastal Kayak Fishing, La Bufadora, Baja California Ensenada, Mexico Fishing:

We did a CKF guided trip last weekend to La Bufadora. It was hugely successful. Even with moderate sustained wind, it blew night and day, we all had good fishing and plenty of time on the water.

We landed barracuda, lots of lings to 7.5# (Hook) and reds that are getting bigger every trip with an easy 3 pound average.

Mark Pierpont looked for the calico bass for days (elusive Friday and Saturday) until he found them and finished with an 8 pounder.

The big catch of the trip was Rich Rax's yellowtail, a 19 pounder. Rax said it is his biggest and best catch so far on his kayak. He stated "coming around the point alongside the festivity and music eminating off the Blowhole tourist attraction......the feeling was surreal in the kelp and boilers....paddling with this big fish across my lap."

We had a few wifes and kids along and big campfires overlooking the Pacific night. There were 12 kayaks on the water and we fished mostly the rock garden tres Hermanas" and the tuna pens that didn't produce more than bass. We usually stay within 2-3 miles of our launch at ramp beach area. Water was in the high 50's to low 60's with different temp currents coming through. I judge the temp with my hands and feet, not a gauge. Many kayakers do use temp gauges.

Dale Whipperman from La Bufadora Dive licensed up with PESCA and has been increasingly sending one of his pangas out with captain Miguel for the whole cold water region fishery including impressive yellowtail counts. It's pretty affordable fishing in the old Mexican panga style for 3 or 4 anglers. You can reach Dale at divebc@telnor.net.

The next open party La Bufadora trips are scheduled for: September 10-12 October 22-24 & December 3-6. Thanks for all and join me at the Ranch if you get a chance. I'm guiding there August 6-18 and October12-20 or we should schedule for next year.

We host these trips at a Bunkhouse at La Bufadora adjacent to the launch ramp that has been re-constructed. It's a Friday-Sunday trip.
