June 17-23, 2005, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing Report:

The water temperature in the East Cape vacation area is beginning to creep up and the fishing is starting to heat up as well.

East Cape Striped Marlin and Yellowfin Tuna fishing are pretty decent as of now and I've got a sneaking suspicion that the Dorado bite is going to go off in the near future.

East Cape saw air temperatures range between 67-98 degrees last week. The water temperature saw a range of 69-82 degrees, with some beautiful breaks over the last couple of days. The warmer water is to the north in the vicinity of the 88, which explains angler success in that area as well as toward the southern tip of Isla Cerralvo. Bait-wise East Cape saw ballyhoo, jurelito, and limited mackerel and sardines.

The striped marlin bite is extremely impressive right now. Together with the several Blue Marlin and Sailfish landed this past week, the overall catch rate among billfish was about 33 percent. Anglers are enjoying some real nice striped marlin action to the north off Punta Pescadero A couple of Blue Marlin were landed to the north off the southern tip of Isla Cerralvo.

The East Cape Dorado bite is still just barely hanging on at this point. Anglers saw limited Dorado action to the north between Punta Pescadero , and off Isla Cerralvo, as well as straight off Los Barriles (32-35 miles), and to the south off La Ribera , Los Cerritos , and Cabo Pulmo.

The Yellowfin Tuna bite remained consistent with an overall catch rate of about 30 percent.

Rounding out the report were 10 Wahoo landed straight off Los Barriles, as well as to the south off Rancho Leonero, Cabo Pulmo, and Destiladeras. Rapalas worked best there.
