YELLOWFIN TUNA MOVE IN AS CLOSE AS 10 MILES
FROM SHORE THIS WEEK AT EAST CAPE

June 3, 2005, Roy Baldwin, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fleet fishing, Baja Sur, Mexico:

The East Cape vacation area had very pleasant fishing weather, with cool mornings in the mid 60's and afternoon highs to the low 90's, clear, sunny days and mostly calm mornings, and some early morning fog and afternoon breezes.

The fishing water temperature at East Cape is variable but warming, with 80 degrees off Isla Cerralvo and 74 degrees off Los Frailes.

With the shifting water temperatures, the fishing remains spread throughout the bay. The inside bite is hot, with big roosterfish biting aggressively near shore, with the tuna bite finally moving closer in.

Billfish are very spread, from Punta Pescadero to Los Frailes, with lots of tailing striped marlin. The fish remain picky biters. This should improve as the water temperature stabilizes, with fish taking live bait and trolled lures equally well.

Tuna fishing has finally moved closer to East Cape, with yellowfin tuna under porpoise about 10 miles straight off Rancho Leonero. The fish are picky biters, with tuna of 10-30 pounds taking hoochies and rapalas. The fishing should bust open once sardinas show up.

Dorado are few at East Cape, but the ones that came in were monsters, with fish to over 60 pounds taking live bait at the buoys north off Punta Pescadero.

A few nice wahoo to 40 pounds came in this week, taking lures and rapalas about 5 miles off Cabo Pulmo.

Inside, BIG roosterfish are close in again this week. The largest was 76 pounds, with fish averaging 30 pounds off the beaches from Rancho Leonero to Las Barracas, taking live bait, with East Cape shore fishermen taking some nice fish with chrome lures and bait. Pargo to 30 pounds and some large pompano are taking bait off Los Frailes.
