BIG ROOSTERFISH LANDED DURING FISHING TRIP TO PUNTA COLORADA

May 19, 2005, Jim Nordberg, East Cape, Punta Colorada, Mexico:

I have just returned from a trip of fishing at East Cape. A trip to Punta Colorada for a week was just what I needed. The weather was perfect, temperatures in the mid eighties, not a cloud in the sky, a light breeze, and all species on tap.

The fishing wasn't wide open, but having said that, good enough to put marlin, roosterfish, pargo, dorado, triggerfish, tuna, and a variety of reef fish on the boat. All fish were released except a few dorado and pargo. The bait was mostly mullet, with sardinas found on one day which lit up the roosterfish and pargo.

During our stay the new boat dock was rolled in, making it easier to load in and out.

My friend, Dan McGowan drove down to East Cape and met me at Punta Colorada, with the dream of catching his first roosterfish. With the help of Carlos on the super panga Yayo, his dream came true. We were south of Cabo Pulmo just off the beach dragging a big mullet over the rocks when the big rooster hit. How he kept that big fish out of the rocks I will never know. I think the fish gods were smiling that day. Our best guess is the fish weighed 50 pounds plus, as big as or bigger than any rooster I have ever caught. Indeed a great week.

I love the East Cape, and places like Punta Colorada. They are the reason I keep going back, great location, great people, great food and unbelievable fishing opportunities. The time of a lifetime is just a few short hours away.
