HIT THE THROTTLE!--Russ Fritz of East Cape's La Ribera caught some nice snappers at Las Barracas by horsing them up off the reef with the boat throttle. Photo courtesy Russ Fritz.

GOOD FISHING FOR SNAPPERS AT EAST CAPE'S LAS BARRACAS SPOT

May 14, 2005, Russ Fritz, La Ribera, East Cape, Baja fishing, Mexico:

This week I fished at East Cape 3 times, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, each day with varied success.

Winds have been light at East Cape, but still out of the north or northeast by noon, and up to 5 or 6 m.p.h. Water temperatures continue in the mid to upper 70's from La Ribera to Los Frailes.

Dorado have been scarce, and the marlin seem to have moved out 7 to 10 miles or so, with yesterday's concentration off the Punta Arena light, and Punta Pescadero. Most boats have been running south to the big marlin bite off the Gordo Banks, and for 2 days there was a wahoo bite just south of Boca del Salado. I caught a nice, but possibly demented grouper yesterday. He took a 10-inch Marauder, which we were trolling at 7.5 m.p.h. for wahoo. Imagine my surprise, as we were in about 100 feet of water.

We have been having very good success with large pargo, over the Las Barracas reefs. They are hitting a sloooow trolled live mackerel, and the trick seems to be to hammer the drag and throttle quickly, pulling them away from their rocky lair.
