MARLIN, TUNA, AND DORADO LANDED THIS WEEK BY RANCHO LEONERO BOATS

April 23, 2005, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape, Mexico Fishing Report:

East Cape fishing was nearly a carbon copy of last week, with continued spring weather, pleasant mornings near 70 and afternoon highs to the mid 80s, mostly clear, sunny days, some early morning low clouds and afternoon/evening breezes. East Cape had 2 days of north wind at midweek. Water temperatures in the East Cape sportfishing area were holding steady at 69-71 degrees, with green water inside as the winds have churned things up. It was a mixed fishing week at East Cape, with marlin, dorado, tuna, pargo and sierra all active on the calmer days.

The striped marlin off La Ribera remains productive, with plenty of marlin to go around, many double hookups, and fish taking live mackerel either slow-trolled or cast on tailing fish, as well as trolled lures.

Tuna are about 25 miles straight out, with fish to 40 pounds under porpoise taking mostly live bait, cedar plugs and hoochies. There is no pressure as most East Cape anglers are concentrating on the inside bite.

Some dorado to 25 pounds are taking live bait and trolled lures, about 10 miles outside, spread throughout the bay.

Inside, there are pargo, sierra and jacks on the reefs from Rancho Leonero to La Ribera, taking weighted live and chunk bait.
