DORADO AND PARGO TAKE DAILY PRIZES IN
WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS FISHING TOURNAMENT

April 15-21, 2005, Axel Valdez, Buena Vista Beach Resort, East Cape fishing, Baja Sur, Mexico:

Total boats out 30. Fishermen 84. Weather Temperature: Mid 70s-Low 80s. Water Temperature: 70-73 degrees. Catch, including released fish: Striped Marlin 40. Sailfish 3. Dorado 1. Tuna 26. Roosterfish 1. Snapper 10. Jack Crevalle 1. Amberjack 1. Pompano 1. Triggerfish 2. Skip Jack 2. Sierra 2.

The East Cape fishing water temperature took a nice jump up, and the crew found water up to 74 degrees, still not as warm as we would like, but this temperature brought the first sails of the season.

Air Temperature: Even with some winds still hitting East Cape this past week, it was minor and it has been very nice weather conditions.

East Cape Fishing Spots and Distance: Marlin continues to dominate the East Cape scene, but some tuna ran in this past week, distance varies from 10 miles to 35 miles depending on what you are fishing for.

Offshore Fishing: Marlin, marlin, marlin, this is the 3rd week in a row with great striper fishing. For the tuna lovers it was good news, but we still expect more.

Inshore Fishing: With little sardine or mullet fishing inshore has been tough, but still the great pargo fishing still going now for 3 weeks as well, and other bottom species also are around.

Successful Lures: Petrolero is getting hotter as well as black and purpura.

Bait Used: Mackerel is what the crew is fishing with, but as fishing, some days the pangueros catch more than others.

Highlight of the Week: Marlin continues to be the highlight of the fishing week at East Cape, but this week it was the tuna that finally made a good appearance.

Gary Spikie from Simi Valley, Calif. took this week's place with a very nice 56.9 lbs dorados. He fished out of Rancho Leonero on the Canela.

Robert Gartrell with a good day, 1 striper, 1 sail released while fishing with Victor Sr. on the East Cape charter fishing boat Vamonos, but it was while fishing with Victor Jr. on the Mosca I that he got several pargos and sierras, one of those pargos landed him on 2nd place for this week's Western Outdoor News Fiesta de Pesca fishing tournament. It was not a big pargo at 4.6 lbs, but good enough for great prizes.
