LOTS OF MACKEREL BAIT BUT FEW SARDINES AVAILABLE
THIS WEEK FOR EAST CAPE ANGLERS

April 1-7, 2005, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Charters 126. Anglers 347. Total Fish 288. Fish/Charter 2.29. Fish/Angler .83. Catch including released fish: Striped Marlin 140. Dorado 28. Yellowfin Tuna 78. Pargo 21. Wahoo 1. Roosterfish 1. Water Temperature 66-74. Air Temperature 87-59. Seas calm in the a.m. with slight chop developing in the p.m.

While the fishing at East Cape is far from stellar, we are on a slight upward trend over the last few weeks. East Cape should see less and less wind in the near future which means we should see better fish counts.

The Striped Marlin bite made a nice showing at East Cape, the Yellowfin Tuna bite was marginal, and the Dorado bite was pretty hit and miss.

East Cape saw air temperatures range between 59-87 degrees, and partly cloudy afternoons about half of the days per week. Our amigos at Terrafin let us know that East Cape vacation area water temperatures saw a range of 66-74 degrees.

East Cape still has an abundance of mackerel bait and an extreme shortage of sardines.

Unrelated to the East Cape fishing report, Smoker Stoker, my Pops and the producer of Baja Shakespeare, and his band of merry Baja Shakespearians, just opened last night with their 5th annual Baja Shakespeare production of "The Taming of The Shrew." If you happen to be in the vicinity of the Palmas De Cortez in the next few nights, go check out the show. A good time is guaranteed to be had by all. On to the report.

East Cape Striped Marlin fishing is pretty nice right now with anglers enjoying an overall catch rate of about 40%. The action is mostly to the north off Punta Pescadero, 3-5 and 14-16 miles, as well as in the vicinity of the shark buoy stops, but some nice action is also being reported to the south of La Ribera 4-6 miles. Mackerel and lures are doing the trick there.

Dorado fishing at East Cape saw a slight dip over the past week and the overall catch rate is down to about 8%. East Cape anglers reported limited success to the north off Punta Pescadero, as well as to the south off La Ribera.

The Yellowfin Tuna bite saw a slight rise over the past week with anglers enjoying an overall catch rate of about 22%. Most of the fish coming in are in the football class, but anglers are still having some fun catching them. Most of the action reportedly occurred between the waters off Los Barriles, 35-40 miles, and Punta Pescadero, 35-40 miles, so, the Tuna are still hanging out on the outskirts so to speak.

Rounding out the East Cape sportfishing report were 21 nice little Pargo landed inshore at Punta Colorada on little mackerel, and 2 Mako Shark brought in off La Ribera on mackerel.
