ROUGH WINDS SUBSIDING AT THE END OF THE
FISHING WEEK FOR RANCHO LEONERO BOATS AT EAST CAPE

Nov. 7, 2004, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fishing conditions, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Rough weather at East Cape Tue. and Wed., with improving conditions as the week progressed. Cool mornings about 70 deg and warm afternoon highs in the 80's, with cooling water temp 81 deg, and afternoon breezes. East Cape fishing really picked up Fri. & Sat. with good numbers of striped marlin, sailfish, dorado, and yellowfin tuna all being taken.

Striped Marlin/Sailfish: The East Cape bite for billfish really picked up as the week progressed. The action was concentrated 10-15 miles straight off Leonero, with most boats in the area scoring, with live mackerel and darker colored trolled lures working best.

East Cape Dorado: Mixed with the billfish outside, and lots of smaller fish 7-11 lbs close inshore, with some larger fish to 35 lbs mixed in, taking mostly live sardinas and hoochies. The occasional bull taken on marlin lures.

East Cape Yellowfin Tuna: Lots of fish in the same spot off Cabo Pulmo for the last 2 months. Average 5-10 lbs with larger fish to 45 lbs mixed in. The bite really picked up at the end of the week, with live sardinas producing best.

Inside: Roosterfish active from La Ribera to the lighthouse, with sierra starting to show up.

Special Note: Jesse Maldonado (the banjo-playing taxi driver) passed away this week. A real character and Rancho Leonero old-timer, he will be missed.
