DORADO ARE AS CLOSE AS THE BOAT MOORINGS AT RANCHO LEONERO

Oct. 2, 2004, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Looks like an early winter this year. We had pleasant weather all week at East Cape, with cooler mornings in the upper 60's and afternoon highs in the mid 80's, with calm, cooling water around 83deg inside & 86deg outside. East Cape fishing is very consistent, with yellowfin tuna, dorado, sailfish and blue marlin all biting.

Yellowfin tuna are concentrated off Cabo Pulmo, with smaller fish just offshore, and larger fish 3-4 miles out. Tuna from 5-35lbs taking mostly live sardinas, with limits for all anglers.

East Cape dorado are very close inshore, from near the boat moorings at Leonero south to the lighthouse. Some larger fish to 55lbs outside. Slow trolled live bait working best.

Billfish - lots of sailfish, 2 or 3 per boat not unusual. Located just outside the tuna, 5-10 miles off Cabo Pulmo, taking live mackerel and sardinas. Quite a few blue marlin from 200-300lbs mixed in with the tuna, taking live bait.

Wahoo - a number of wahoo came in this week, located between the lighthouse and Cabo Pulmo, about 1 mile off the beach. Purple marauders working best.

Inside - no pressure, with most East Cape fishing boats concentrating on the hot tuna/dorado bite. Some large solitary roosterfish, cruising off most area beaches, from Leonero to the lighthouse. Slow trolled live sardinas and caballitos working best.
